Let's be honest: most agency directories are "pay-to-play." The agency that bids the highest gets the #1 spot, regardless of whether they can actually design complex software.
We built UXAgencies.com to fix that.
We are not salespeople. We are designers. Every agency on this list is manually audited by a Lead Product Designer with 10+ years of enterprise experience. We rank based on merit, process, and proven results—never ad spend.
Here is exactly how we evaluate the agencies you see on our lists.
The 4 Core Criteria
We don't care about flashy awards or big-name client logos (unless they're verified). We care about one thing: Can this agency solve hard product problems?
1. Proof of Process (Not Just Pretty Pictures)
Most portfolios are just a gallery of final UI screens ("The Happy Path"). That tells us nothing. A junior designer can make a pretty Dribbble shot in an afternoon.
We rank agencies higher when they show the messy part of the work:
- User Research: Did they actually talk to customers?
- Problem Solving: What was the business metric they needed to move?
- Iteration: Show us the wireframes that didn't work.
The Reality: An agency with a "boring" case study that explains a complex workflow solution will always outrank an agency with beautiful but shallow marketing visuals.
Show, Don't Tell: A Comparison
We evaluate agencies by looking at their actual output, not just their marketing claims. Here is a simplified example of how we view two hypothetical portfolios:
Agency A (Ranked Lower)
- Portfolio: 20 polished, high-gloss UI shots of a crypto app.
- The Gap: Zero context. No mention of technical constraints, user pain points, or data.
- The Signal: They likely prioritize "pretty" over "functional."
- Verdict: Good for visual production, risky for product strategy.
Agency B (Ranked Higher)
- Portfolio: 3 deep case studies (e.g., "Redesigning a Logistics Dispatch System").
- The Evidence: Shows messy wireframes, user interview quotes, and "before/after" flow diagrams.
- The Signal: They explain why they chose a specific navigation pattern based on testing, not just trends.
- Verdict: Solves business problems. A strategic partner, not just a pair of hands.
We rank Agency B higher every time. This is why our top-ranked agencies aren't always the ones with the flashiest websites.
2. Contextual Expertise
A "top" agency isn't top at everything. If you see an agency ranked #1 for Fintech in Berlin, it might be #15 for E-commerce.
Why? Because designing a regulated trading dashboard requires a completely different skillset than designing a fashion store. We check their portfolio for specific industry experience. If they claim to be healthcare experts, we expect to see HIPAA-compliant apps in their history, not just landing pages.
3. Business Legitimacy
The internet is full of "agencies" that are actually just one freelancer with a Wix site. There is nothing wrong with freelancers, but you shouldn't be paying agency rates (€80-150/hr) for them.
We verify:
- Legal Entity: Are they a registered company?
- Team Reality: Do those people on the "About" page actually work there? (We check LinkedIn).
- Physical Presence: Do they have a verifiable address?
4. Profile "Effort"
It sounds minor, but it's a huge signal. Agencies that take the time to complete their UXAgencies.com profile—listing their exact services, team size, and rate ranges—are usually the ones that have their operations in order. If they can't be bothered to fill out a form correctly, they probably won't be rigorous with your product requirements either.
Agencies that claim and verify their profiles demonstrate engagement, which is factored into our evaluation.
We consider:
- Logo and description.
- Services and specializations listed.
- Team size and rate range provided.
- At least one case study uploaded.
What Doesn't Buy a Ranking
"Pro" Membership
We have a Pro tier for agencies. It gives them analytics, lead access, more portfolio slots, and "featured" visibility in some areas.
It does not buy them a higher organic ranking.
A free-tier agency with a proven portfolio will always outrank a Pro agency with mediocre work. If we compromised on this, our directory would be useless to you.
Case Study Volume
You don't need 50 case studies. You need one good one. An agency with a single, deeply detailed case study that explains their thinking will rank higher than an agency with 20 generic project thumbnails.
We review case studies on your website and any case studies uploaded to your UXAgencies profile. We look for:
- Evidence of UX process (research, testing, iteration).
- Clear problem statements and measurable outcomes.
- Design craft and attention to detail.
- Complexity and scope of projects.
For Agencies: How to Improve Your Ranking
-
Claim and complete your UXAgencies.com profile: Fill in all fields: services, team size, rate range, description, etc. Incomplete profiles rank lower.
-
Add at least one case study to your profile: Help us see your best work. Make it a project that shows your UX process, not just your visual design.
-
Strengthen your website portfolio: Add detailed case studies with process documentation, not just final visuals. Show research, iterations, and outcomes.
-
Stay current: Agencies with recent work rank higher than those with portfolios from 2019. Update your website and UXAgencies.com profile regularly.
-
Build credibility signals: Client testimonials, industry recognition, thought leadership content, and presence on other platforms all contribute to our assessment.
The "Secret Sauce" (Why We Don't Share the Formula)
We don't publish the exact mathematical weightings of our ranking algorithm.
This isn't to be secretive; it's to prevent gaming. As soon as we say "Case studies are worth 40 points," agencies will start manufacturing case studies to hit that number instead of doing good work.
We evaluate the whole picture. We audit every agency with the same rigor a Lead Product Designer applies when vetting a partner for a mission-critical enterprise project.
Editorial Corrections
Sometimes, waiting for the quarterly refresh means showing you outdated data. If an agency launches a game-changing portfolio piece or we find a verified data error, we'll update their score immediately to reflect reality. These are corrections based on evidence, not favors. You cannot buy, request, or negotiate a manual adjustment.
Ranking Tiers and Badges
Based on your ranking, you're eligible for different badge tiers:
| Your Rank | Badge |
|---|---|
| #1 in city | "#1 UX Agency in [City] 2026" |
| #2-3 | "Top 3 UX Agency in [City] 2026" |
| #4-10 | "Top 10 UX Agency in [City] 2026" |
| #11-20 | "Top 20 UX Agency in [City] 2026" |
| #21+ | "Featured UX Agency in [City] 2026" |
Badges are updated quarterly when rankings refresh.
Rankings Refresh Quarterly
We update our city and industry lists every quarter (Jan, April, July, Oct). This keeps the list stable enough for you to rely on, but fresh enough to capture new talent.
Questions
Think your ranking should be higher?
- First, claim your profile and ensure it's complete.
- Check that your website portfolio showcases strong UX case studies.
- Upload your best case study to your profile.
Still think we got a ranking wrong? Tell us. We're humans, not AI bots. If you can prove you have better work than the agency ranked above you, send us the case study. We read every email.
Our Commitment
We built UXAgencies to help companies find genuinely excellent UX partners — not to sell rankings to the highest bidder.
Our business model is simple: agencies pay for visibility features that help them convert visitors into leads. Rankings are earned through quality work, not purchased.
If we ever compromise on this, we lose the trust that makes this directory valuable. We won't.
